These are called collector cars, and though the market for them has waned in the past few years, there are still certain makes and models out there that collectors go crazy for. Here are some of the top cars in the collector car market.

1955 Mercedes 300SL Gullwing. When this car came on the scene in the 1950s it was hailed as a revolution. It was the fastest production car in the world and had doors that opened up and away from the body like a bird spreading its wings. It was built for motorsport and went on to win Le Mans, the Nurburgring 24 hours as well as coming in second and fourth in the Mille Miglia in 1952. It was also the first production car to feature fuel injection and is highly prized by serious collectors. A model in pristine condition can fetch as much as $600,000 or more at the right auction. Plus, with Mercedes about to release the SLS, the original Gullwing is going to come back into the spotlight once again as a collector’s dream car.

For those looking to get a little American Muscle in their garage, the highly collectable Ford Mustang GT 500 KR from 1968 is the way to go. This American bruiser was fettled with by Carol Shelby and had a 428 cubic inch engine under the hood. The 428 Cobra Jet V8 put out a conservative 335 horsepower (it is said that the engine actually produced closer to 450 hp) and made the car one of the most powerful production cars on the road. Stunning examples will go for upwards of $150,000, though that means they have all the correct number and Mustang parts on them.

But for the ultimate in high end classic collectors cars, there is nothing that touches the Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa from 1957. This car sold in 2009 for $12.2 million and stands as the most expensive car sold at auction. It is one of only 22 ever produced and has a full racing history to back it. It featured a 300 hp, three liter V12 engine and a four-speed manual gearbox. It truly is one of a kind and will probably never see the light of day again, unless it is daylight shining through a window in a museum.

If you fancy trying your hand at buying a collector car, the Internet is the best place to do some research and find out if there are any car auctions in your area. The largest collector car show in the world is Barrett Jackson, and it takes place in Arizona in the spring.

This car is one of 215 made the first year they made the Grand National - it's a T-Type with less then 60,000 original miles - everything is original except the battery - It's very rare as there are only about 100 still owned. Unfortunately my husband doesn't know enough to give it the love it needs. Would like to sell it to a collector or someone that restores them but don't know how to find someone that would know what they are buying... if anyone has any suggestions they would be welcome...
