Jeep Cherokee 4wd problems?

My brother just bought a 2000 jeep cherokee classic. 4.0 4wd, auto w/ 113k on it. He was playing with the 4wd on some dirt road and apparently while in 4h he was driving and it began to make a grind sound, he said he felt like it was slipping as he was giving it gas but hardly accelerating, until he finally came to a stop. If he puts it back in 2h its fine, drives normal. This has happened twice to him. Is he doing something wrong, or does it sound like a major problem?

Check ur front axle u-joints,& drive shaft joints. Axle joints are not a job for a drive way, Do It Ur Self'r.
