Visit Maldon

Famous for its world renowned Sea Salt, Maldon is a town that mixes old and new in an interesting and unique way. Conveniently only a relatively short journey from the hustle and bustle of our capital city, Maldon and its surrounding district offers you the chance to get close to nature in its many green areas open to the public.

Visit Maldon and you will find various activities and areas to amuse children. Opened in 2006 and free to use is the very popular children’s Splash Park. The Splash Park is open all summer, weather permitting of course. Having taken my own children their recently, I can confirm that they had a great time and didn’t want to leave.

Also located in the Promenade Park is a large ornamental lake, amphitheatre, play galleon and fort, aerial runway, model boating, crabbing lake, three sand pits, children’s play area, children’s maze, skateboard and BMX area, a scenic riverside walk, formal gardens, cricket and football pitches, tennis courts and a variety of shops selling food and refreshment.

There is plenty of room in the pay and display parking areas, including dedicated disabled spaces, should you travel by car and three public toilets available, which also have disabled facilities.

For the adults who visit Maldon there are plenty of picturesque walks and opportunities to relax while fishing, or why not bring your bike with you and explore the area while cycling. From the quayside you could take a cruise along the river, or if you have sea legs, maybe a cruise along the coast. You may just want watch the Thames Sailing Barges go by while enjoying a drink with family or friends on the Hythe Quay.

In town there is a plethora of tea shops, cafes, bars, pubs and restaurants to choose from when you need to take a break from the various shops and interesting sights and attractions Maldon has to offer.

If staying for more than a day you will find many B & B’s, guest houses and hotels in and around town to choose from. The family owned Osea Leisure Park, situated in the town of Heybridge just outside Maldon, gives you the opportunity to own your own caravan or lodge and sample all the benefits that come with holiday home ownership.

With a friendly atmosphere and excellent facilities you can relax and unwind in a safe and secure environment for a weekend away, short break or family holiday.

There are many events that take place in Maldon such as the ever popular Mud Race, Maldon Carnival, Maldon Beer Festival and the Maldon Festival of Arts to name but a few. The Mud Race is a sponsored event organised by the Lions and Rotary Clubs of Maldon. Competitors can chose their own charity for half of the money they raise with the other half going to local community charities picked by the Maldon Lions and Rotary Clubs. Competitors from all over the world are welcome and in the past they have had competitors from Germany, Finland, New Zealand and the USA.

One recent event was the Maldon Classic Motor Show. Due to return in July 2010, the 2009 show featured a variety of pristine classic cars and commercial and military vehicles and even included the Ford Gran Torino and the General Lee (Dodge Charger) from the TV shows Starsky & Hutch and the Dukes of Hazard.

A historic town full of maritime history surrounded by areas of natural beauty. Make sure you visit Maldon sometime soon and see why so many people keep returning to this fascinating town.

Unknown classic/vintage vehicle.. who can help ID the car?

Came across this classic vehicle, with a rather strange hood ornament, not know to me or my colleagues... any suggestions of where to look to find out?
Got pictures of the car and the ornament if that helps....
got pictures on my computer, they aint online yet... where to put them online for easy access? havent got access to quite a few things from this work computer....

Definitely a Ford Pilot I remember them from the 50's & 60's. They had a 3.62 litre 90 hp side valve v8 capable of 80mph. Google Ford Pilot v8 & have a look on Wikipedia like I just did -gives a good history.
