Is car worth more because it appears on tv series?
I'm thinking of buying my friend's car. Its a 1986 Ford Tempo GLS with 250,000 miles. He says he recently changed the air filter and had the muffler serviced. Blue book says the car is worth $300 to a private seller but my friend claims that the car is a collector's item because it appeared on several episodes of the 1980's show Airwolf. He even is throwing in a framed picture of the car racing at 100+ mph while Airwolf was flying overhead (If I do buy the car I want to find Jan Michael Vincet to autograph). He says that $15,000 is a fair price given the cars history and the fact that Ford Tempo's have a cult following and are really hard to find. Is this a good deal? Assuming I do buy the car what are some common maintenance areas I should be aware of. I wouldn't want to change anything original but want to keep it running for another 250,000 miles. Thanks!
Anyone can claim that any car was in "such and such" TV show or movie. Unless he has documentation from the show's producers indicating that car was in the show, there's no proof.
Also, just because a car was in a movie doesn't necessarily add value. If the guy was selling the Mustang used by Steve McQueen in the movie Bullitt and he had proof it was THAT car? Absolutely it would add value to the car. However, a Ford Tempo used by Earnest Borgnine in a 3rd rate 80's TV show? Not likely.
Basically, if you buy this car for anything more than Blue Book value (which is $125, by the way), you're a fool
