how does backpressure affect the way a truck runs? thank you?
my ford ranger has a loss of power like crazys when going up hills. its a 3.0 v6 auto. the exhaust is so- called "custom" and i think its what the problem is. has two cat-converters on it with straight pipe after that till it gets over the back axle and then they cut a hole in the side of the pipe and stuck another one in to make it dual.
"Backpressure" is used to slow the discharge of exhaust gas from the combustion cylinder. This will in turn slows the intake of fresh fuel/air mixture. The purpose of this is to ensure the air/fuel doesn't "rush" through the cylinder too fast at low revs for it to burn completely. Or else power will be lost - mainly effecting low end torque. That is to say the engine is "weaker" which shows up most when the engine is under heavy load.
Probably worse is the fact that the computer will be very confused now, not delivering the correct ignition and fuel injector timing.
Sounds like the exhaust system would make a great junk sculpture though.. or boat anchor
