custom auto painting and of the sort?

I live in California and would like to have a career where I do custom paint jobs on any vehicle i choose. I am aware that I will need an art degree, but don't know what courses i should take and what college would be best for reaching this profession. I know i will need to know airbrushing and fine arts. I have been told by my parents that i should take transportation design, however it seems like that would be for someone who wants to design the entire body and layout of a vehicle rather than just drawing and doing custom paint on them. I would like answers from people who already do custom paint jobs or are perusing this profession, but all input is appreciated.

I would start with design I, II and maybe III, then you need the color theory (painting 1). Go to a Community College as a starter and see where it takes you.
